The order in which I discuss these tactics are in such which I would deploy, not in order of effectiveness. Effectiveness, and in some cases deployment, will vary depending on your industry, specific business, marketing strategy, and simply how "good" your program is for each tactic.

1. SEO IN DESIGN®.

   My team wrote a short article here which explains SEO IN DESIGN®.  This is an age old, time tested tactic, and is a discussion that's been held on countless forums. SEO IN DESIGN® are steps you, or your developer, can take during the development and planning of your website. In short it's a five step test to see how your current site stands up to good and practical SEO from a development / design standpoint. This covers Title Tags, Meta data, Image and Link Tagging, Search Engine Friendly URLs, and all important Content. Implementing these in your site properly will provide your website with a strong foundation in which to build your SEO and Internet Marketing efforts. They are by no means all steps required for superior SEO, but again, are the first steps, and ones to consider heavily during the design of your web presence. Unfortunately, SEO IN DESIGN® is one of the most overlooked, underperformed services by website developers for four major reasons:
   • Most SEO IN DESIGN is not visible to the naked eye. Developers too often cut short their efforts knowing the client will never visually see the difference.
   • SEO IN DESIGN takes time and consistency. If the client does not understand the importance, they will not be willing to pay for these extra efforts.
   • Developers use website building systems unable to utilize such tactics. Unattainable with some systems are unique metadata and search engine friendly URLs.
   • The importance of SEO IN DESIGN® is not understood. Many website design firms do beautiful eye pleasing graphic design work, but fail to truly capture the importance of SEO for your business. This is much like buying a nice car just to let it sit in a garage.
   A final note: If you are building your own site, beware of online do-it-yourself "Website  Builders" offering quick and easy setup of your web presence. Is your website built with search engine optimization in mind? While SEO is not entirely in the hands of website developers, there are several important techniques they should use to help build your ranks. There are 5 simple tests you can perform to see how well your designers did.

1. TITLE TEST: Page titles are very important to search engines. Titles notify search engines and users about information found on your page. The title should be unique for EACH page of your website, contain relevant keywords search users will type to find your page, and be directly related to the content found on that specific page. You can see the title at the very top of each page, either across the very top bar, or in a tab if you have multiple tabs open. The title of this page you are viewing is "Search Engine Optimized Website Design".
   
   
2. META DATA TEST: Metadata is information about your website and web pages. Metadata is not information you see visually, but is information informing search engines about your website and respective web page content. There are several meta-tags in metadata, and is often overlooked by website designers. Metadata is found as the first few, or several, entry lines across the top of your page's source code. You can view source code of this page or your website pages by Right-Clicking in a BLANK AREA" of a web page (in the black space on left or right on our site) and selecting "View Source" or "View Page Source". Look for the "META NAME=" entries. How complete is your site data compared to ours?
   
   
3. TAGGING TEST: Search engines DO NOT understand what an image is about from visual appearance. If you have images on your website, then they should be ALT and TITLE tagged. Tagging helps search engines identify what images are in reference to / about. ALT tags are words that would be in replacement of an image, and TITLE tags provide keyword information about the image and your web page. Also any links (URLs) on your website should be TITLE tagged. For correct link tagging, keywords should be used to describe the link's location content. To see an image tag, roll your mouse over the gold seal below... the ALT or TITLE tag will be displayed depending on your browser.
   
   
4. SEF URL TEST: The URL, short for Uniform Resource Locator, is the address location of a resource on the web, such as this webpage. The url for this page is:
   www.thewebdna.com/search-engine-optimization/seo-organic-search-engine-optimize-design.html
   A great search engine friendly (SEF) URL will include keywords relevant to the page your are viewing. Since the onset of content management systems (CMS), the world wide web is seeing an increase in ineffective URL naming. An example would be:
   www.thewebdna.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=103&Itemid=213
   Do you see the difference? This URL does not provide sufficient data in it's naming convention to help search engines better identify the content on this page. Try performing a search on Google. You will notice most of the first page search results use keywords in their URL; keywords that match your search words. So what does your website have?
   
   
5. CONTENT TEST: Content placement and usage in your site is very important to search engines. What are the names of your menu links? Where are they located? What information appears at the top of your pages vs. the bottom. What words are bold, italicized, emphasized, acting as headers, larger? How often are your keywords and key phrases repeated? A well laid web page will clearly emphasize the most important data, display the page title in the content of the page, use keywords / key phrases throughout the page, and of course be an effective resource for the visitors whom the information pertains too.

2. SHARE READY, SOCIAL BOOKMARKING

There are three primary submission types we create and execute for our clients and recommend you use too.
   • Website Map Creation and Submission - A website map will let search engines understand and know the available page links on your site. Many CMS websites will have a built-in XML and HTML sitemap generator, but if you do not, you can learn about creating and submitting...
     • Google Sitemaps • Yahoo Sitemaps • MSN / Bing Sitemaps • Ask Sitemaps
     Though there is an interesting read on the benefits vs the pitfalls of sitemap submissions, we retain the side of submission over natural indexing. We suggest you submit to both Google and Yahoo. Likewise in your robotx.txt file (located in your web root) you should indicate your XML site map file location such as: "Sitemap: http://www.thewebdna.com/my-sitemap-file.xml"
     
     
   • RSS Feed(s) Creation and Submission - An RSS feed will allow your visitors the ability to subscribe to content changes on your site. Using Feed Readers and News Aggregators your visitors will be able to stay up to date with your changing content without having to revisit your website. This means RSS subscribers will get information from you they may not otherwise have gotten because they have not re-visited you site. You can learn in more detail about RSS Feeds here.      • You should register your feed(s) with the search engines, just like a site-map, and also register it / them with FeedBurner.
     
     
   • Google Base XML Product Feed Creation and Submission - Google Base is another widely under-utilized, and of course 100% free marketing resource. Google Base allows you to add (or upload an XML file of) your products / services offered by your business. There's practically nothing you cannot add! Tangible or non-tangible; Products, Housing, Events / Activities, Jobs, Vehicles, and more. There are three immediate benefits a business can gain by Google Base submission:
     1. Primarily, your base submissions may end up in first page Google searches under SHOPPING RESULTS, such as:
        Google Search for "Hobie Odyssey Kayak"
     2. You don't need a website to post your items online! Yes, add your items to search results without a web presence.
     3. If you do have a website, while minor, it does provide another link to your website

4. LOCAL MAP LISTINGS

   All three major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN/Bing) offer this excellent free resource for businesses dependent on local clientele or tourists. Depending on your business type and SEO experience, this could be the single most effective contribution you can make to your organic SEO when considering the time requirements. Local map listings are displayed when search engines decide search users are looking for a local resource. Typical triggers are:
   • Search for: industry, city | city, industry (example for "San Luis Obispo Wine")
   • Search for: industry, zip code | zipcode, industry (example for "Wine 93401")
   • Search for: specific business name (example for "Central Coast Wines")
   • Search for: industry and search engine recognizes users IP (example for "Wine")
     note: this last example will vary depending on YOUR location.
   If you followed the example links above you noticed these map listings are displayed on the front page! In the case of Google, up to 10 businesses within a given industry / category will appear. So the questions is, is your business showing up for a number of broad local searches in your area? Beware: There are several dozen newly formed Organic SEO companies willing to charge you in excess of $100 - $500 /mo for optimized implementation of these FREE listings. They will offer First Page Google Results within days. If you own a business, chances are you have already been solicited by them via email, phone, and/or fax. The truth is, your web developer may be willing to do it for free like we do for our web clients. Since this is a rapidly expanding field, with ever greater competition, and there are acceptable tactics that will dramatically improve you map listing, we do recommend you carefully analyze your competition and hire a SEO professional to optimize your listings.

   Another factor in search engine ranking is the time in which visitors stay on your site. The longer the visitation, the better your results. While providing useful information on your site may be enough, we recommend you add some form of visitor interaction. By doing so you may:
   • be a useful resource in your industry
   • increase your visits
   • increase re-visitation
   • build relevant website content
   • decreasing your visitor bounce-rate
   • provide reason for others to link to your site
   Vlogs (Video Logs) and Blogs (Web Logs) may be sufficient, if not ideal for your site and strategy, in accomplishing these tasks. Forums and Commenting systems however, will provide the means to direct, two way communication between you and your visitors, and amongst each other. Not only can this be a helpful resource in understanding your clients better, it allows visitors to feel and be a part of your business.
   
   There are thousands of ways to utilize the resources discussed; guest books, how to videos, product ratings and reviews, open discussion chat rooms. A simple example of one is on this page. We allow visitors to comment on this article (here), and give them reason to do so by providing link-back to their website from the comment submission. Likewise we hope to provide a helpful resource and discussion around the topic of SEO and SEM. While we recommend you install these resources directly on your website, you may not have the technical experience or monetary means otherwise, so there are websites who offer these resources for FREE on their site. In the case of Blogs and Vlogs, we recommend you do both; on your website and through free popular sites:
   • Google's FREE Blogger
   • Learn about Vlogs and respective resources
   • Excellent list of open source (FREE) forums for your website
   • Yahoo Answers on best FREE commenting system for website
   • Google search results for "Free Guestbook"
   • As for voting/rating systems, you will need to consider what is being voted/rated. If you want to offer this ability on products, directory listings, etc, then you should research a proper platform which includes these features already.
